ELS

English Language Services (ELS)

The Shamong Township School District’s school community is dedicated to the goal of supporting our English Language Learners (ELLs) in acquiring the English language, advancing their content area studies while learning the language, and providing a safe learning environment in order for ELLs to develop their English language skills in real-world contexts.

The Shamong Township School District follows the WIDA Can Do Philosophy, in which everyone brings valuable resources to the education community. Linguistically and culturally diverse learners bring a unique set of assets that have the potential to enrich the experiences of all learners and educators. As our students learn additional languages, educators can draw on these assets for the benefit of both the learners themselves and for everyone in the community. By focusing on what language learners can do, we send a powerful message that students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and experiential backgrounds contribute to the vibrancy of our K-8 schools.

ELLs are required to meet the grade-appropriate New Jersey Learning Standards in all content areas, including English Language Arts. English Language Services (ELS) teachers deliver meaningful instruction that is comprehensible in all content areas. Students learn English for meaningful communication and use English language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking to connect to relevant content, social issues, and real-world area topics. The program is designed for students to produce and interpret English in order to be linguistically proficient and culturally prepared in the real-world contexts of the global society in which they live and interact with others.
