At Indian Mills School, our school staff maintains a nurturing learning environment where our students grow academically, socially and emotionally. At our school, we recognize that each of these areas is as important as the other and we strive to provide an education which addresses each area. In order to effectively address aspects of social and emotional well-being and positively affect the academics, the majority of our homeroom teachers, grades one – four, are level one trained in The Responsive Classroom program. The approach consists of classroom and school-wide practices that deliberately help children build academic and social-emotional competencies.

Overall achievement test scores and report card grades reflect a high level of academic excellence and success. Each year, school objectives are identified and adopted. Recent school objectives addressed our second grade students' knowledge of portraiture in the art class and the fourth grade students' ability to read basic Spanish passages and to use written Spanish to respond accordingly. Our teachers develop reading and writing skills through guided reading and reader's and writer's workshops.

The students experience many activities during the day. Students in need of remediation receive supplemental instruction from the language arts basic skills teacher where they supplement the regular curriculum with alternate programs. Enriched and accelerated math classes are offered in the third and fourth grades respectively, as alternatives to the other heterogeneously mixed classes. IMAGE program provides pull-out instruction for those identified as gifted students. Additionally, instruction in art, music, computers, physical education, library and Spanish are part of the total education program the students of Indian Mills School receive. Our school counselor provides support for children in individual, group and class settings. The class lessons focus on bullying, character education and study skills.

Indian Mills School is actively supported by two community organizations, the Home and School Association (HSA) and the Shamong Foundation for Educational Excellence. Funds raised by both organizations allow the teaching staff to enhance their many educational activities. Additionally, many parents volunteer at the school on any given day. Our parents are very generous with their time!

Indian Mills School provides an excellent learning environment for our students. We recognize the importance of our school having a positive, nurturing, and upbeat climate. We are a part of a small community and recognize the importance of the "family atmosphere".

Through our highly qualified and dedicated staff, committed Board of Education and involved community, we continue to provide an exemplary elementary education for the children of Shamong Township.

Sincerely,
